Conference The Knowledge Hidden from the World: Why Academic Research Needs Visibility.

Researchers work for years in academia and research institutes all around the world developing research that could impact the work of industries, education, healthcare, and public policy. Each dissertation, journal article and thesis is the result of many hours of intellectual research and investigation. However, this work is of value and has not been widely available in other settings than academia.

One of the biggest issues of today's academia.

The vast majority of academic studies never reach those who would be able to use them to benefit society. Key findings can be trapped in institutional archives, academic databases or in specialized journals that have restricted audiences. Science produces new knowledge all the time, but society is often not in tune with science.

It isn't so much that they lack innovation. The problem is that they don't communicate.

Today, influence doesn't necessarily happen when you conduct research. Ideas only make a difference when they can be heard, seen and used in the real world. This emerging awareness has changed the nature of academic publishing and thus demand for a new model of academic communication: the high impact academic (trade) book.

High impact books will have different goals than traditional academic publications: they will seek to get research into the public discourse. They work to ensure the credibility of the scholarship and present ideas in a manner that is accessible to and engaging with a wider audience. These books translate complex theories and data into valuable insight that can impact the industry, the leadership, the educator, and the policymaker.

The whole academic publishing environment is undergoing rapid transformation. Over the years, the measures of success were citation, journal publications and conference presentations. These still are important but in today's knowledge economy, the engagement with the public, the interdisciplinary influence and the practical relevance are becoming more and more valued.

Consequently, today's researchers are not just “scholars.”Today's scientists are not just “scholars.” They are turning into authors, thought-leaders, consultants and public speakers. They can only have an impact on what they know and how well they tell.

An important part to a successful academic book is determining a powerful main idea. Readers are engaged with ideas and ideas that make sense of larger significance than that of individual academic research results. From books on AI to those about workplace culture to climate change and healthcare innovation, books that have an impact bring a focus to the importance of the research to society.

The understanding of the audience also is vital. Many researchers, in their quest to have the greatest possible impact, only write for experts. Instead, high-impact books focus on educators, professionals, policymakers, students and readers with a curiosity for insight on critical issues.

There needs to be clarity as well. While a technical precision and a formal structure are usually key features of academic writing, it is important that influential books are readable and engaging. People take in information better if it is provided in an illustrative manner, with examples, stories, and applicability.

The advent of digital publishing has opened up these opportunities around the world. Like Amazon Kindle and Google Books, these platforms enable researchers to share their ideas with the world without depending entirely on the academic framework.

Finally, the influence of the academic scholar will be determined by the ones who can create more than knowledge. It is one of those who can take ideas and communicate them to the public; make research accessible to the world. Research, stored in archives, has limited impact – research shared is able to shape the future.
