How to develop a successful PhD proposal by conducting good research methodology.

An effective research methodology is one of the most crucial elements to include in a successful PhD research proposal. Even if the research topic is highly relevant and original, the universities may reject the research proposal if the methodology is not clear and feasible. Methodology represents the "how" of research: it provides information on how the research will be carried out and how sound conclusions on the study will be reached. Because of this, supervisors and admissions committees focus on this section during the evaluation process when considering candidates for the doctoral program.

The methodology section starts with the determination of the overall approach of the research. The study can be a qualitative, quantitative or mixed method approach depending on the type of topic. Qualitative research typically is used to uncover experiences, opinions, behaviors, and social meanings, and quantitative research is used to analyze numerical data, measurement, and statistics. The research is a long process for the Doctor student, and the University would like to see that such research can be accomplished within the timeframe. The study is divided into stages: literature review, data collection, analysis, thesis writing, which demonstrates organizational skills and the discipline of studying.

Many proposals often have unclear and impractical methods. There are some researchers who describe methods very briefly without details and some who select methods that are not suitable for the purpose.
