Introduction: The degree was never the asset. The real asset was knowledge creation.
The entire academic system is designed to be linear: study to produce work to pass an exam/presentation. In many ways research has been an asset that needs to be built and destroyed over time rather than preserved and leveraged over time. Every thesis is designed, research produced, documented, and submitted for an academic evaluation where, after defense, it’s simply uploaded and added to the university system where visibility, leverage and value end almost immediately after evaluation. The system awarded a passed, or failed, grade to research-not value. The real output of a thesis is actually special insight from one domain created by an individual over months, or even years, that is applicable to the real world; something valuable in today's global, information driven marketplace. Because of this, a thesis is more than a paper for a university class anymore. Instead it’s actually a research asset with tangible value and the potential to create professional opportunities for a researcher in various capacities, like through books, consulting, or learning products. Thesis commercialization has become the strategic endeavor of moving these academic insights from the ivory tower and out into the professional and public sphere. The act of taking that academic asset and translating it so that the outside world can use it is essentially thesis commercialization; something, which isn't actually simplification of an academic concept, but simply finding the best avenue for existing knowledge. Digital technologies and the web have brought about major changes to the research and publishing process allowing academics to now build their own audiences outside of conventional academia using many new platforms including linked in, YouTube, podcasts, sub stack and various others. Now an academic researcher can now take their expertise and not just gain the recognition for producing academic rigor, but also be a valued and respected expert in their own field by organizations and individuals outside of academia. In a world that thrives on information and insight a thesis that stays within academia simply has too much unfinished potential that it could be impacting the world outside if the researcher was more savvy about how to leverage their asset.
