Introduction: Submission is no longer the end game.

For many years the flow of research had a closed-loop nature: A student researches a topic, produces thesis, argues thesis to the university examiners and then hands it into the university. Upon acceptance, the thesis was then lodged in institutional archives with a belief that its work there was done.

However, the system built for such a flow does not exist today.

The knowledge is the digital visibility, knowledge economy, specialized skills and the international exchange of knowledge. Knowledge cannot be bounded by a class room or a library. Knowledge spreads through industries, through platforms and businesses and among users at an unprecedented speed.

In such an environment the thesis cannot be viewed solely as an academic document.

It's the intellectual capital.

A thesis embodies many years of analytical thinking, a structured method for addressing problems, a unique interpretation of data and a brand new original contribution to a specialized field of knowledge. It clearly presents to businesses the attributes they require: a profound depth of knowledge on a subject, a sharp analytical reasoning ability and a strong sense of strategic judgement. However, most of the potential that a thesis carries remains confined within academic archives, never reaching and contributing to those audiences who would benefit from it the most.

This is a fundamental limitation in the current academic system.

The system is geared heavily on validation rather than utilization. Researchers are trained to finalize research successfully, but not necessarily make the research valuable beyond the confines of the academic process. The end result: a plethora of high quality research papers and studies possessing commercial, professional and personal potential that are not visible to the relevant audiences.

The knowledge economy today thrives on different principles.

Organizations today compete based on information, knowledge and skills, businesses actively seeks insights from research to gain a competitive advantage, tackle newly emerging issues and make better decisions, all while the digital revolution has given power to a whole new world where authority is shaped by new criteria, and information is distributed using new channels.

Researchers are now able to reach a global audience and communicate with them effectively through professional networks like LinkedIn, online media like Medium and Substack, and visual platforms such as YouTube, podcasts, webinars and independent publishing systems, all of which greatly weaken the walls that previously segregated academic knowledge from the wider community.

This introduces an entirely new aspect to the academic enterprise: Thesis Commercialization.

Thesis Commercialization is defined as a process to transform an academic work into a valuable and useful output through a range of techniques that are professional and relevant. A thesis is no longer confined as a submitted manuscript in university archives; it has the potential to be published as books, industry-focused reports, consultancy packages, professional development frameworks, on-line learning modules, seminars, workshops or it can be translated to the role of a recognized industry opinion leader.

It is important to understand that commercialization does not diminish the academic merit of a thesis.

It enhance the relevance of the research.

The future research will not be defined by how it is produced but by how well it can bring value to the individuals it is produced for. Researcher who could bridge this gap between academic pursuit and real-world application will gain a tremendous advantage in professional as well as intellectual sphere.

Such transformation hinges on a shift in mindset:

A thesis must not be viewed as the conclusion of a students academic career. It must be recognized as the launching pad for the scholar’s ongoing career success and influence.

The traditional academic system ends with submission; the contemporary one begins with the follow.
