Publishing Gives Research a Life Beyond the University.

 Publications extend the reach of research beyond the walls of the university. It is true that the research itself, through years of analysis, writing and thought, can already be considered an achievement. Yet a piece of research does not truly come into its own until it is seen, accessed and utilised by broader communities. For this reason, the act of publishing is arguably one of the most crucial aspects of contemporary academic endeavor.

The contemporary university and research institution judge academics and their research based on a set of metrics, most importantly through publication and its corresponding citation rates, through a contribution to global discourse in a field. Academics are not expected to just produce work, they are expected to communicate and distribute their work effectively.

For an academic researcher publications are more than just markers of academic output, each journal article, conference presentation, review study and book chapter helps in shaping their professional profile and scholarly credibility.

 Quality of research can often be more important than quantity. A well-respected piece of research will provide much greater authority for the academic and university than many less significant works will, as it will most often display strong principles in terms of relevance, originality, rigor and lucidity. The most innovative research can easily be wasted due to poor writing.

Journal choice significantly impacts citation rate and visibility. Research that is published in journal indices, will be much more visible than those which have not, thus increasing academic authority. Prior to submission the scholar should assess the journal for quality of editorial review, standards, and audience. Predatory journals exist throughout the scientific publishing world, and those that use them will gain nothing but a damaged academic reputation.

Consistency of output is another major consideration. Those that publish on a regular basis have, by virtue of that consistency, established an active pipeline of research, in the form of collaboration and of future planned work. This consistency allows the academic to accrue greater recognition over time.

Collaboration has also played an important role in the success of publishing over recent years, particularly international and interdisciplinary partnerships that both enhance research quality and extend a researcher's network. In this way, the researcher has a greater reach through the wider academic community and increased potential to receive significant recognition for their work. Furthermore researchers in the contemporary age must actively consider publishing one's work post-publication using tools such as Google Scholar, ResearchGate, LinkedIn, academic web pages, webinars, podcasts etc to increase visibility. It is often simply a matter of promoting work effectively to enable an increased number of citations, as many of the most significant pieces of research will not be accessed and cited unless attention is drawn to them. Citations serve as a yardstick for academic success and research impact. Finally ethical standards remain at the core of academic publication, it is paramount that scholars avoid any fraudulent or untrustworthy behavior. This includes fraud, data manipulation and double submission to multiple journals. In the age of digital publishing open access systems and the introduction of AI tools the researcher must be aware of both the standards for successful publishing and that publishing today gives a piece of research a life far beyond the university walls.
