Turning your dissertation into professional authority.
There's inherent value in research, it's often seen as nothing more than an end-of-course requirement and a prerequisite for a degree. For years scholars put immense effort into conducting research, analysing data, literature reviews, defending their ideas and ultimately, submitting. Afterward, very often the dissertation quietly disappear into university databases and doesn't reach people and institutions who could actually utilize the research. This is a missed opportunity, in my opinion. Research is one of the most valuable forms of intellectual capital nowadays. Businesses need intelligence. Industries need innovation. Policymakers need evidence-based decisions. Institutions need experts to solve complex issues. Research done for a dissertation could do all that and a lot more, even without authors realizing. Strong dissertation signifies expert knowledge, credibility, creativity. It shows the researcher can think critically and make sense of information, that he/she is able to investigate problems thoroughly and to build concrete arguments out of them. These are not only qualities of a researcher, but also of an effective professional. What is lacking in most cases, in terms of the education systems, is the post-degree strategy regarding research. Students learn to conduct it, to present and defend it, then to move on. Rarely are they taught how to publicize their ideas to gain visibility and influence or to be regarded as thought-leaders. The modern era has drastically expanded these possibilities. Now scholars aren't limited to academic journals and library shelves. Research can be turned into a book, a blog, online courses, podcasts, conference presentations, a consultation business or other professional contents. Dissertations could become a personal brand, a vehicle attracting international opportunities. It all starts with a different perception. Dissertations shouldn't be "just a thesis" they should be viewed as intellectual property and valuable information. With this understanding, more opportunities will begin to open. Each project researches a larger issue. Specialized topic is part of bigger issues such as business and technology innovation, education reforms, social development, health solutions, leadership challenges, sustainability, etc. Researchers can gain more visibility by focusing on the bigger picture of their study and framing it accordingly. Clear and simple communication can be equally important as technical aspects. While the academic style calls for meticulous details and complexity, the general public may appreciate accessible language and concrete solutions more than rigorous academic wording. Researchers who simplify and popularize their findings gain exposure; this doesn't mean compromising the quality or value of the research. Strategic publications matter: journal articles strengthen academic profile, books lend authority, thoughtful articles on line boost visibility, presentations and conferences offer the possibility to network. Using digital resources is a key for creating direct links with your target audience and shaping opinions on a larger scale. Regular, constant communication builds an online audience. Many scholars are hesitant to submit because they think they haven't "finished" their work yet. Other people don't realize that their expertise can be so valuable. Visible and acknowledged thought-leader gains more authority as they keep sharing their opinions, experiences and insights. Professional branding is crucial too: what is the point of being an expert if no one knows about you. In today's society institutions look for leaders, who are articulate, influential and capable to share ideas effectively through professional channels. Research publishing creates numerous career benefits, including public appearances, consulting activities, collaborative projects, media interviews, speaking engagements, international contacts etc. Professional and visible researchers always open doors to new and valuable opportunities. I believe the future is reserved for those researchers who are not only able to research, but to make their research reach the public, build an audience, influence institutions, shape the debate and make a real difference in the world. Submission shouldn't be the end. The power of research starts beyond the walls of the university- and within every single thesis the potential of influence and impact resides, but you need to activate it yourself.
