Why Today's Education Rewards Action and Proactiveness ?
Today, the education system is changing significantly. In the past, learning was mostly rewarded through docility, recall and good test results. Now, in most institutions worldwide, initiative, proactiveness and participation are gaining increasing importance. It is now the pro-active students that achieve better places and recognition than those who limit their efforts to what is strictly necessary.
Initiative, i.e., the tendency to act independently, look for opportunities and actively contribute to work without necessarily being given directions, has been highly valued in today's educational and academic circles. Both universities and employers are seeking motivated people, willing to take things forward, to overcome obstacles and solve problems on their own.
A good example of initiative is student involvement in research. Participation in a research project, assistance to a professor or an independent study project show academic serious ness and prove that a student not only wants to learn, but also contribute.
Participation in leadership and student activities are another manifestation of initiative. Organizing events, leading an association, joining volunteer work or being involved in group projects reveal proactiveness and responsibility in front of both peers and authority. Universities are looking for students actively involved in academic life, not for passive attendees.
Personal skill development also plays an important part. Today, students who independently train their writing or analytical skills, public speaking, or digital skills achieve better places than those who have no inclination for anything beyond the established curriculum. This approach to education shows that these students understand that university is a place to constantly acquire knowledge, a skill they have gained on their own.
Digital environment opens new possibilities for proactiveness. Students can build a personal webpage, participate in a web-conference or publish articles. Having an independent web-page or personal blog helps them find better job opportunities and makes them well-known at academic or professional level.
The development of individual initiative strengthens personal confidence, which in its turn affects a student's chances of getting an offer, during a presentation or an interview. Being used to look for challenges and difficult situations, they will be more confident.
A reason why initiative is so valued today is that competition has become global. Universities get many thousands of applications with identical exam scores and qualifications; a pro-active attitude is what will allow to stand out from others and be noticeable for the university or future employer as they can see the students potential and self-improvement efforts.
Modern employers and institutions require problem-solvers instead of learning recipients. The skill to react, to cope, to be flexible and participate actively to work requires the possession of an initiative skill set that the pro-active students are naturally endowed with.
Finally, modern education awards students that demonstrate an initiative of their own, not merely complying with the given framework of learning. Researchers, leaders, motivated students are the one that get a stronger chance to succeed.
