A research paper lifecycle - so it's published, now what?

 For many researchers, the moment an article is published signifies a culmination of many months (or even years) of hard work. Developing an experimental design, gathering data, analysis, writing the paper and enduring the rigorous peer review process can be considered 'mission accomplished' the moment the paper is live on the internet or appears in print.


However, publication is not the end for a research paper. In fact, in many ways it is the beginning.


Upon its publication, a research paper enters the academic world and the lifecycle which will determine its contribution and its effect on the scholarly community. The real effect and influence of a paper relies on the extent it can be discovered, engaged with and utilized by others.


The first phase after publication is discovery. How easily can the research paper be discovered by interested researchers from all around the globe through databases, search engines, networking, or colleagues? There's no point having exceptional research if no-one knows about it.


Secondly is the phase of readership. Readers must take interest in your work, the title, the abstract and keywords play a crucial part in attracting their attention, especially when they are actively working in the same field.


Thirdly is engagement. What will encourage readers to discuss their findings, share your paper, use their conclusions in a presentation or, even better, in their own work? Engagement will convert simple information into influencing factor.


Fourthly, the paper will be cited. Each time another academic sees value in your work to include it in their own research, your original research will be extended and referenced within the scholarly debate. Each citation signifies that your work has added to a current conversation.


Fifthly, long-term impact. The most successful papers build the foundation for future work, influencing entire fields for years or decades to come. Other papers might influence policies, teaching strategies, business decision making and future technological advancements.


Those researchers that understand the cycle of research papers after they have been published will be more likely to maximize their work. They understand that publication alone will not guarantee the research paper will influence the academic community, it must also be discovered, read, understood, applied and remembered.


It is not simply that research papers get published. That is just one part of the process. A research paper's success and impact are measured on how it will effect the way researchers investigate and understand the world around us in the long run.
