Academic Success, Work-Life Balance.

When we talk about successful scientists we often mention their productivity: they must publish, get research grants, go to international conferences, mentor graduate students, service the institution, etc.

While productivity is important in an academic career, there is also the danger of working under immense pressure, which causes burnout- a serious and increasingly common problem at universities worldwide.

Burnout is detrimental to our health, creativity and effectiveness in our work, thus research needs to be sustainable to improve the overall quality of academic careers and research itself.

One of the pillars of sustainable research is prioritizing; not every task has the same weight, and researchers that prioritize them and work at the high impact issues will have a better performance compared to those who try to handle all of them in a simultaneous manner.

The establishment of realistic goals is another fundamental concept; ambitious goals may inspire but unrealizable goals will only create more frustration and stress. It's crucial to break down large research goals into achievable stages.

Proper time management will allow the researchers to continue to work but also ensure there is plenty of room for relaxation and recovering.

It's also crucial to set boundaries with your work, as academic tasks tend to take up any time they are given.

Working with research colleagues will reduce workload pressures. Teamwork and task sharing will definitely improve efficiency but also benefit from establishing better working relationships.

Institutions also bear a responsibility for fostering supportive research environments by promoting work-life balance, providing health services, valuing diverse forms of work, etc., and preventing burnout.

Researchers themselves need to realize that recovery time is vital; a creative idea will not appear without having the mind relax and be free for new ones.

Research should be as much productive as it is sustainable to avoid exhaustion and make research careers longer and more meaningful.

Consistent effort through many years of an academic career will most probably lead to more impact rather than occasional spurts of great effort, especially if the researcher stays healthy throughout the process.

Productivity matters, but only if it's sustainable.
