Google Scholar and Research Platforms increase impact.

It’s clear to me that digital platforms have fundamentally changed research dissemination, citation and discoverability. It appears researchers actively manage their online academic profiles and will see higher visibility and better citation growth than those who depend solely on their journal output.


One of the most important resources currently available is Google Scholar.


A strong, well maintained profile on Google Scholar is in essence a researchers' professional academic portfolio. It serves as a portal for discovering a researcher's work, provides citation and impact tracking as well as a measure of a researchers authority in their field.


Essential features should be:


* An accurate institutional affiliation

* An up-to-date list of publications

* A list of the researcher's research interests

* Basic biographical profile information


The role that other academic networking platforms play in research dissemination cannot be understated. Some widely used platforms are;


* ResearchGate

* ORCID

* Academia.edu

* SSRN


These platforms allow researchers to upload their research output, connect with colleagues, discuss and distribute their work and promote it for discovery by a greater audience.


Accessibility has been shown to be one of the strongest driving forces of citation increase. Researchers tend to find the more accessible a paper, the more they are likely to cite and reference it, the research networks remove some of the barriers between author and reader and this dissemination will cause a research output to be discovered geographically and institutionally over greater distances and barriers. The second area is networking researchers often meet collaborators at conferences and online discussions will spark interdisciplinary conversations, leading to further collaborations and published work. The third element is that strong online visibility reinforces the research output which in turn builds the researcher's professional brand over time.


However, an up-to-date, but static profile, is not enough. Researchers need to share new publications, respond to requests from readers of their work and engage in academic discourse.


In the modern research environment online visibility directly impacts the influence a researcher has. If a researcher engages in online academic networks and promotes their work, they are likely to see improved discoverability, citation rates and a network of meaningful contacts. Research is no longer just produced but also disseminated and debated, I believe the greatest impact comes from this increased discoverability and visibility on researcher profiles.
