How is it that one researchers become greater than others?

All researchers start out by curiosity, there is something that capture attention or a gap in understanding and we need to do something about it. In research you do discover things, there are people who does it and people who become known for it.


Great researchers are not smarter than others, don't get more funding, and don't work at famous universities than "good" researchers. Great researchers have the "research mindset".


A research mindset is seeing uncertainty as an opportunity instead of a threat and knowing that "knowledge doesn't grow out of prediction, it grows out of surprise." Researchers need to deal with lack of information; instead of avoiding tough question they seek them.


Persistence is another important part of being a successful researcher. Academic life is hard and filled with unsuccessful grant applications, manuscripts that are not published, failed experiments and surprises that we didn't expect. Those that are most successful are not necessarily those who are the most successful in avoiding failure, but the ones who succeed in dealing with failure.


Intellectual humility is also important and is a distinguishing factor for great researchers; researchers that realize that they don't know everything and are open for new information, perspectives and criticisms can create a better research.


Curiosity also plays a central role: "The best researchers are not just looking for answers to the questions, but are more interested in better questions." Curiosity will drive the research work and will help find overlooked perspective and information.


 Collaboration is often crucial for finding solutions to complicated problems today, it may be necessary to use many different people and backgrounds to obtain good results, which leads to better research. A research mindset include that they want to learn and do it better.


 Great researchers are life-long learners and always aware that there is always something new to learn in terms of technique, theories or fields and it helps them achieve good results.


 A research mindset also means doing work because of the value and not for the prestige/ awards or fame of the work they have produced and their primary goal is always for their work to improve something. It is also that they see challenges as something that needs to be tackled instead of avoided which make them more driven to do something that would last for a long time and that the research have a purpose.


Everything one achieve in academia is based on how he/she think about it and also how he/she think in general which in this case would be the research mindset. Research mindset helps scientists get the ability to face challenges.


 Great researchers aren't necessarily known because of the discovery itself, but because how they approach it and as a consequence of this, a research mindset is what may separate good researchers from great researchers.
