Keywords are how researchers find our work in this online world. Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, and university repositories are all databases that can only sort research by keywords used. If we haven't included the correct keywords, it can often remain unseen, even to those interested in our subject matter.


Keywords help search engines understand what a paper is about and if people searching for relevant work, do not enter keywords in their literature search, but are instead searching by relevant phrases and terms. Our research should use these common phrases and terms in their title, abstract and keyword section so the document is discovered.


Keywords need to be chosen by trying to think as others doing a literature search do. It may seem that you should be as technical as possible and use obscure terms but more often then not a search will yield results from keywords which have been more commonly searched, making them the more appropriate option for your paper.


You should endeavor to ensure your keywords represent the general topics that you will be researching, the main areas that you will be working in and the methods that will be used during your research. It will help get your research to who it needs to go to without drawing traffic to papers who are in a different field altogether.


You should look at what words are used most frequently in your field when searching for articles. The field of research can alter and thus so do many of the terms we use when we carry out literature searches.


Strong keywords do more than allow you to search for them within search engines, they help bring people to your paper in the form of reads, downloads and will in turn get you citations. A study is more likely to be cited if people are able to find it easily.


Many researchers spend weeks or even months carrying out research but minutes deciding on keywords, something which can lose them an increased number of citations.
