How Research Mentorship Contributes to Academic Influence?

 Scholarly impact is traditionally assessed through publications, citations and grants received. A critical factor in a research career, however, is mentorship. Researchers who invest in and help junior scholars grow contribute more to their own field than any other mechanism: their influence continues for generations.


Research mentorship is the process whereby a more senior researcher provides guidance to a less experienced colleague in order to foster development as an academic. A mentor might assist with any number of tasks including: helping plan a project, editing written materials (such as papers or proposals), making a manuscript or grant proposal ready for publication and submitting the same, professional advice on the future of one's career and professional networking.

Mentorship therefore offers a way for mentors to strengthen and continue the work they value.


Finally, the mentoring process itself is a form of scholarly leadership. Those who commit themselves to a mentorship role at the institution recognize it as important work that directly contributes to the field as a whole through the people that the institution is cultivating and supporting.


In order for a mentor-mentee relationship to work, the mentor has to put a great deal of effort and commitment into the role as well as have an understanding of the mentee's goals and interests, in addition to the patience to guide that person to independence and expertise. However, those researchers who take the time to build and foster successful mentor-mentee relationships can gain a measure of influence that is difficult to find in other ways.
