How Research Summaries Can Expand Academic and Public Engagement?
research summaries- they bridge the gap between research and wider accessibility
Why are we talking about this? Research Papers are meant to be an audience of academics; so naturally they will contain jargon, complex methodologies, and heavy analysis. But we do want our research to reach beyond those boundaries so how do we overcome this issue? Research summaries. Research summaries are condensed versions of a study which outlines the main aims, methods, results, and conclusions. In simple terms, research summaries are an informal version of the full academic papers which summarize all the crucial information in clear and accessible terms. 1. Improved accessibility. Research papers aren't the most accessible for some people, for example, if you are a policy maker, teacher, student, businessperson or even the general public, you don't have enough time or may not have the expertise required to understand a full, lengthy academic paper. Research summaries cater for such groups, making research understandable to the public. 2. Academic visibility Research summaries promote research visibility among other academics, and make it easier for academics to find research to cite, they engage more in a document when it's easy to understand the research and its significance. 3.Digital communication The age of digital information has lead to the need for brief content. Summaries are now used more often as scholars push there research out via websites of universities, news outlets and even social media. This ensures that information reaches far beyond academic circles. 4.Knowledge Transfer In most case the findings of a research paper have real life applications, yet technical analysis within research often prevents us from applying knowledge learnt within our day to day lives. In a sense research summaries facilitate knowledge transfer from the academic to the real world by clarifying the main findings, possible implications and even the impact of the study. 5.Communicating major contributions A major contribution by a researcher can sometimes be buried under a mass of detail within an academic research paper, and a summary helps communicate those contributions. 6. Effective communication of research. One way to promote understanding research is the ability for researcher’s to summarize their work to reach broader audiences and the more effective someone can communicate, the more impactful their research can be. As more is expected from researchers regarding public engagement and knowledge transfer to the outside world, the role of research summaries is becoming more important in enhancing impact and visibility of the work conducted. In the modern world of knowledge transfer research is now only valuable if it is understood and accessible and that is exactly what summaries of work have done for us!
