How Technology is Changing the Field of Academic Research?

In the last 20 years, the field of academic research has transformed in ways that can only be described as phenomenal. Today, it has changed everything researchers do, from how they gather data to how they cooperate with other academics, process and analyse data, and disseminate their discoveries. Technology is no longer the tools used for research it has become integral to it and the processes in and out of the field.


Data has been changed from the ground up through technology. The ease in which data can be obtained by use of online questionnaires, sensors, handheld devices, large data-sets etc. Means that research speed and accuracy is higher than it ever was before. Big data have now opened the field of research to new possibilities and research opportunities within many diverse disciplines from economics to the medical and social sciences through to environmental sciences researchers now have the possibility to analyse large data-sets to obtain knowledge previously beyond the grasp of the researcher. Artificial intelligence is having a big impact on the process of research as there is machine learning, which processes complex data, predicts trends, and uses that data to answer questions which before the rise of such tools would not have been possible due to time and resource restrictions imposed by a research process not powered by such technological innovations. Collaboration between researchers is now made incredibly simple through the use of online working spaces, the internet itself, video conferencing facilities, and other online communication facilities that allow researchers from various countries to participate in the research process equally regardless of the distances that separate them, a factor that historically dictated and often prevented such collaboration. Information is now easily accessed through online libraries, research paper repositories and data sets as opposed to relying solely on libraries within institutions. This makes learning a much faster process, and allows researchers to carry out much more in depth literature reviews. Information is also disseminated more easily, through the use of webcasts, online conferences, podcasts, digital journals, etc the research field and those interested have the possibility to view findings and opinions across a much wider platform than ever before. Of course with new technologies new challenges are arisen such as data privacy and security, algorithmic discrimination, the use of AI and various ethical considerations must be borne in mind when incorporating technological advances in the research process. Also it is vital that researchers, as well as the new researchers entering the field, continually learn new processes and applications within technology to maintain a productive research process. Even with the challenges the field has become more effective, opportunities have opened up and there are much greater possibilities for what can be learned. As technology is not stagnating the research process will continue to be further impacted and the researcher who is most open to incorporating technological advance within their research will be best placed in the academic community in years to come. Technology isn't making the researcher obsolete; it is allowing them to reach more with their research.
