The way impact is measured has also been refined; with evidence of contribution to the policy, to public services, to the society, through public engagement, among others, is as important as the citation count. This, further incentivizes researchers to think beyond just writing academic papers and beyond reaching the 'ideal reader.'

A focus on creating real-world impact can provide researchers with new opportunities for funding, partnerships and reputation while positively contributing to a number of social problems.

The future of research does not lie in generating knowledge itself but in its practical application, by translating findings into impacts that benefit people across the globe.
