The Importance of Research Ethics in Building Academic Credibility.

Among the most prized possessions for a researcher, academic credibility is surely the top on that list. While reputation, citations, or publications could play a part in professional achievement, no accomplishment could ever substitute a researcher's research ethics. Academic ethic builds the trustworthiness that a research community should adhere to and it's crucial for long term influence. Research ethics means the guiding principles that researchers should obey when conducting research, such as honesty, transparency, integrity, fairness, respecting participant, collaborator or other members in academic community. Accuracy in research ethic is extremely important. It indicates that researchers are responsible for accurately reporting data without manipulating them and research should make actual contribution to our knowledge rather than producing untrustworthy results. Citation of prior work is as important as accurately reporting results since proper acknowledgment shows researcher's respect for intellectual property and supports academic honesty, on the contrary of giving raise to the possibility of plagiarization which severely damage reputation. Besides that, researcher should also responsible for participants when conducting study with them, they have to secure their right, informed consent, privacy and safety when conducting any research related to human participants.Transparency is another way to gain credibility in research community since by explaining methodology, limitation, and any conflict of interest, other researchers can evaluate the research more accurately. University, journals and funding institutions hold research ethic at a high degree. By always upholding such moral principles, researchers will establish better credibility, which ultimately bring them influence and more opportunities for their future studies and career. Lastly, ethic is not only a set of guidelines to be obeyed under strict requirements but also a commitment from the researcher's part which will make the outcomes of the research trustworthy and valid throughout the entire research process, especially during such time when amount of research papers grows rapidly.Ultimately, academic influence is gained not only by what researchers find but how researchers conduct their research process.
