The Importance of Research Dissemination Beyond Journal Publication.

For some, once an article has been published, the work is done. However, publication is simply the end of one stage of a study. To ensure its impact is maximized, researchers need to actively promote their work and make sure it reaches the people it needs to reach.

The act of sharing research findings with the academic, professional and public communities is called research dissemination. This can help increase the visibility of the study, encourage collaboration, and promote the translation of the findings into practice and policy, or to new research.

Traditionally, research is disseminated through journal articles, presentations at conferences and academic seminars, but in the modern age there is much wider range of opportunities for sharing. Digital technology has changed how research is disseminated, and academic networking sites, institution repositories, webinars, podcasts, blogs and social networking sites can be used to target audience members beyond the usual academic groups more efficiently.

An obvious benefit of research dissemination is discoverability. Work which is effectively shared, will attract attention and may be read, discussed, and ultimately cited by others. Researchers cannot cite studies which are unaware that they exist, and so visibility becomes an important factor in a researcher's citation count.

Another benefit of disseminating is the transmission of knowledge, and so researchers need to make an effort to communicate with policymakers, healthcare professionals, educators and people in the industry. Research can only have a practical impact on issues such as policy, or practice, if the people who can implement change read, understand and take on board what the researcher has produced.

Researchers need to consider their audience; academic paper would be useful to an academic but not necessarily to the general public or a policymaker. It is useful to consider the form which the dissemination should take, be that as an article, an infographic or presentation to make findings readily digestible.

Dissemination should be considered to be an on-going process, not something that can only happen once. Keeping a high profile of your work will contribute to ongoing discovery and research collaboration.

In today's increasingly competitive environment, disseminating your work is an important tool for academic success. This article advocates taking advantage of new communication methods in order to maximize the effect of a study and increase researchers' impact.

The findings of useful research ought not be kept to one self, or limited to specific academic circles. Today there are numerous ways in which the results of the work should be disseminated to people who need to know, to put that knowledge into practice.
