The Revolution in Academic Visibility: Great Ideas Need a Helping Hand.

Academic research is on the cusp of a visibility revolution. A whole host of digital databases, networks and communication channels are available to researchers today that allow them to distribute their work to audiences across the globe. However, a global researcher audience does not automatically equate to academic influence. Competition for readership now ensures that merely producing good work is no longer sufficient; making the research visible is equally important.

Academic visibility is central to ensuring that research has a long-lasting impact. A research paper may contain innovative theories, novel methods or significant results but unless other researchers can find it the overall influence of the research is severely limited. Visibility ensures that new ideas are integrated into the academic discourse where they can be rigorously critiqued and built upon.

One indicator of such an influence is the citation. Every citation is a testament that another researcher has been convinced of the value of previous work. A good citation record is a way of establishing creditability, proving an ability to do the required work and enhance one's academic reputation. Good citation records can lead to funding, promotion, overseas collaboration or speaking opportunities.

Achieving greater visibility requires conscious thought by the researcher; not only where the work is published but also how it is presented and how accessible it is to search engines. While publishing in journals appropriate to one's subject will remain important; a concise title, well written abstract and search engine keywords are crucial.

The digital revolution within academia can provide many avenues for enhancing academic visibility. Continually updated researcher profiles, engagement in academic social networking sites and sharing through appropriate research channels can all extend the readership of a research paper.

The increased potential to connect with fellow academics can be achieved through involvement in conferences, workshops, seminars and projects. It is often these small academic conversations which are the genesis for much good research collaboration, and subsequent citations.

The growing awareness of the need for public understanding of science should also be harnessed, not by sensationalizing research but by making complex ideas available to a broad range of people in an easily digestible form (research summaries, blog posts, presentations, etc.) It is a vital opportunity for expanding influence beyond narrow specialisms.

Ultimately however, visibility must be about augmenting quality rather than creating it. Sustainable academic influence stems from original research, ethical practice and significant advancements in knowledge. While the visibility revolution is exciting; it will never substitute for good science.

Researchers who engage with both invention and communication will best positioned for the future of research. A research paper reaches its true potential only when it is read, discovered and understood by others; a successful combination of research brilliance and clever promotion ensures that individual papers contribute more to their discipline as a whole.
