The Role of Personal Branding in Academic Success.

Historically, researchers were best known by their papers or institutions. Now, however, an increasingly competitive and global academic environment requires researchers to also focus on personal branding in order to become visible and establish a credibility. A personal brand in academia is nothing about personal marketing and publicity. It represents who you are as a researcher in terms of your subject, area of interests, and your contributions in the academic fields. A good brand helps other scholars to distinguish you as well as easily remember and identify the subject you study in the academia.

First, increasing researcher visibility. Being visible can bring scholars numerous advantages, including but not limited to collaborating with more excellent peers or other institutions, and receiving higher number of citations. Researchers who publish their work and communicate with academic communities consistently through publication, attending conferences and using various social platforms are more visible than others. These scholars are easier to be noticed and sought by collaborators or employers.

Second, strengthening academic brand could increase the credibility of scholars. As researchers continuously provide meaningful insights on a certain topic, they become reliable sources in that field. This can leads to many opportunities for the researcher to give speeches or invited lectures, take part in projects or programs, review manuscript, and so forth. Eventually, their contributions and impact can expand from their own disciplines to wider social sphere like the public and policymakers.

The modern era sees increasing number of ways for the researchers to do academic branding. By maintaining a profile on ORCID, Google Scholar, researchgate and LinkedIn and creating a professional homepage, researchers can clearly present their achievements and experiences to the general public.

Consistency is the key factor of building personal brand. Trying to develop expertise and make contributions on a specific research field consistently would be better than writing paper on many irrelevant fields, as the former can build the researcher's reputation.

Effective communication is another important element for academic branding. Researcher, who can articulate their findings well and explain them to non-experts with clear language and concise logic, would be well received by various audience ranging from their peers to the public.

Moreover, personal branding can provide more career opportunities for the researcher. When considering for promotion, appointment to a leadership position or research funding application, the researcher's credibility and influence are increasingly important factors.

Crucially, personal branding has to rely on actual competence and meaningful contribution in order to achieve authenticity and sustainability. A false academic brand is unable to establish long term trust and recognition within academia.

In an increasingly globalized and digital world of research, building an effective personal brand as a researcher may be more critical and indispensable than ever before.

In the modern academic world, to be a successful researcher is not only about the knowledge created but also about how to make your expertise to be well known, trustworthy and memorizable.
