Why Research Impact Matters More Than Publication Numbers?

 Over the years, the success of a researcher was widely measured by the number of papers published by them. Although the number of papers has been an important factor for the success, it is now recognized that impact is more valuable than sheer quantity. One few good publications might actually result in far more prestige and respect to a researcher, than twenty low impact articles. Impact, also refers to the effect of a research on other scholars, as well as on practitioners, policy, and society. Impact, is mostly assessed through citations. However, it's also about contribution of research towards problem solving, innovation, or decision making, etc. Publication of large number of research papers might not reflect the impact generated by these studies as some of them are very narrow, unnoticed or they do not create any worthwhile controversy or discussion. But one good publication can transform the shape of a field. Many institutions, and grant agencies are now laying emphasis on impact metrics rather than publications output only. According to them, it is much better to be cited and contribute to meaningful outcomes, rather than merely adding a large volume to existing research literature. Impact, or the reach and significance of a study is likely to gain momentum by addressing major concerns of society, identifying contemporary research topics or answering complex research questions. Such studies draw attention as they provide a significant amount of knowledge to scholars in order to further researches. Communication of a study, or dissemination of knowledge is as significant as generating knowledge; it helps to bring the research to a wider audience and hence maximize the impact. A researcher shouldn't solely rely on the citation metrics of their research in order to calculate the impact. Teaching, and policy related impact, industrial application and public awareness is also crucial to determine the significance of a study. Finally, the impact of a research can be assessed only by looking into the qualitative contributions and societal relevance; this will always require patience and consistent contribution to knowledge.
