Honorary P.hd’s – the recognition of a universities most treasured people.

Being institutions of higher education and research as well as academic achievement, universities award honorary Doctorates – but in contrast to actual doctorates. In order to do one of the former you study a subject until originality and insight come from you on your subject, it also leads you for four years (possibly longer) until you produce. However one receives an Honorary Doctorate – a prestigious accolade given in recognition of an individual’s significant and valuable contribution to the arts, sciences, humanities, or public service or for work of exceptional distinction and merit at either regional or national level that reflect on the excellence or standing of the University or that raise public awareness in relation to these.

Honorary Degrees aren’t simply another, higher PhD but acknowledge excellence, integrity and an lasting contribution of value and meaning to society in various fields or professions; this includes people who’s impact in a given subject, field, and community, as well as perhaps throughout life may or may not be academically relevant but reflects the excellence, ethos and prestige of the awarding institution.

Usually recipients are expected to accept the title for their work alone not as opposed to their qualifications and usually also take a prominent place at a given ceremony not simply receiving but addressing graduation students where the recipient of an honorary Doctorate speaks words of encouragement. They also often act as figureheads of institution as well as being very important public relation for them which is why honorary Doctorates may go to figures who’s profile may raise a University’s public perception whilst still have work which the University holds highly which reflect in there work or career in some way. This is therefore why The University of Oxford awards honorary degrees to world leaders in Science, technology and medicine whilst the University of Leeds award them not just to academics in the fields of biology/ science (their greatest strength), or for humanities at top UK level, but also to local heroes, and local and global figures in politics and public life that has also impacted this Northern region of the UK and Europe as much as at national level - and beyond.

Why should and will this continue?

University’s recognize that their purpose can and will and does inspire all of us that true learning is not contained in classrooms but in actions, in initiatives and in leadership, for both individuals and as a nation, these awards can and have spurred generations on.
