ISBN vs DOI: What Researchers Should Know When Publishing a Thesis as a Book?

Researchers work with several kinds of publications. They write academic books, journal articles, book chapters, technical reports, conference presentations and others. When preparing a thesis as an article, book, or book chapter, it’s likely that you'll run into both ISBNs and DOIs.

If you're trying to publish your thesis as a book and you're new to this process, you're likely unsure of which identifier you need.

The truth is, you need a bit of background on both.

If you're publishing your thesis as a book, you'll likely need an ISBN not a DOI.

What Is an ISBN Used For?

ISBN stands for the International Standard Book Number.

ISBN identifies published books and related entities such as a hardcover and paperback edition of a single book and books of any language, including those published in the U.S., which carry a 13-digit format and are assigned a DOI if applicable (the ISBN will include an ISBN.org DOI, or ISBN-A).

In addition, the ISBN enables any booksellers (major chains, university stores), library, university book stores and distribution organizations that handle 95 percent of all global titles as an "in print" books, (and for books which contain some element of digital information or access or contain elements that the digital content provider claims in many contexts will not have it and therefore are assigned the 13 digits with DOI not an 13 ISBN or that has elements contained with the online/e-book as an 13 digit. ISBN are only to be used to differentiate 19 books that would be classified under an same broad classification). So whether this be an individual, group or organization it has a unique 13- or 10-digit identity and each of its different " editions" such as a "paperback" edition or " hardcover", has its own ISBN.

What Is a DOI Used For?

A DOI is an acronym of "Digital Object Identifier" and a DOI assigned to a publication provides a durable online link that always goes to the location where your published document is hosted on the internet and makes finding a citation or a particular article very easy.

A DOI is more frequently associated with "journal articles" and "reports" as there have been far too many to keep track of with an individual, group or organization of each publication and edition of publication. Therefore it's usually preferred over an individual and its publications by researchers over the years. This also include "books" since the publication process for books now involves with an author "creating" for example, two or three (2 to 3) distinct editions of their books over time in print format in order to keep up with trends in its format.

In general "online” based publication entities such as a journal publication or even a technical report (but not a books. Why The Difference Matters for Thesis Publishing Since your thesis as a book you will need an ISBN for your work as it supports the work being found through a bookseller’s (e.g.,Amazon) website or a library catalog’s systems. Without ISBN you won't be found by many in bookseller stores.

On the other hand, a DOI is designed for digital resources and while a published book could have online/digital features or be considered a “digital publication," it would need the support of an ISBN.

Avoiding Common Confusion The difference between ISBN and DOI seems to be the most common and perhaps one of the more problematic sources of confusion among first time thesis published as books or first time book author on general since many writers don't understand where or how these identifiers can help them. One source of error comes in the fact that these identifiers help provide “discoverability"-people can locate and access information through them. Yet they each do so in different spheres, withISBN for book industry (i.e., booksellers, libraries) and DOIs for digitally-available articles/reports.
